Your data: what Microsoft has said, and what it has not

What Microsoft has said

“After Project Online is retired in September 2026, you will no longer be able to access your projects or any associated data within the service.” Microsoft’s Planner blog, repeated in the final Message Center notice of 24 September 2026.

The retirement happened automatically, with no admin action. For help after the date, Microsoft’s blog says to contact your Microsoft account team.

What Microsoft has not said

Any page that gives you a date for these is guessing. On 2 October 2026, some users reported that their instance was unavailable on 1 October and reachable again the next day. That is a user report. Microsoft has not confirmed it.

If your instance still opens, export today

Microsoft’s export script needs a Project Online license and Project desktop connected to your Project Online instance. Once the service is gone, it cannot run. Save each plan from Project desktop as an .mpp file and as XML while you still can.

What to do now

  1. Check what you have. List the exports you already hold: .mpp, XML, Excel or CSV.
  2. Try your instance. If it still opens, export every plan you still need, then stop relying on it.
  3. Check your licenses. Essentials has ended. Plan 3 still includes Planner premium and Project desktop, so check who uses them before you cancel anything.
  4. Decide where the work goes. Microsoft points to Planner, Project desktop, Project Server Subscription Edition and Dynamics 365 Project Operations. See your options after Project Online.
  5. Bring the plans in. See how to import Project Online plans and what gets lost on the way.

Where Teamhood fits

Teamhood is project management software with Kanban, Gantt and timesheets, for teams that run many projects with the same people. The Gantt has dependencies, critical path and baselines. Each person’s working hours and time off count across every project.

It imports plans from MS Project XML. It does not replace PWA governance such as demand intake, stage gates or portfolio analysis. If you need that, Project Server Subscription Edition is Microsoft’s answer.
