Project Server 2016 and 2019 end of support: your options

Microsoft ended support for Project Server 2016 and 2019 on 14 July 2026. Microsoft no longer provides free security updates. The options are an upgrade to Project Server Subscription Edition, a move to Planner in the cloud, or a move to another tool that runs on your servers or in an EU cloud.

What ended on 14 July 2026

Project Server 2016 and 2019 follow Microsoft’s Fixed Lifecycle Policy. Mainstream support ended earlier, in July 2021 for 2016 and in January 2024 for 2019. Extended support for both ended on 14 July 2026.

Microsoft no longer provides free security updates for either version. Its self-help content stays online for at least 12 months after the end of support.

Project Online is a separate product. Microsoft set 30 September 2026 as its retirement date. The retirement does not affect Project Server or Project desktop.

Where Teamhood fits

Teamhood fits a team that wants to leave the SharePoint stack but keep its data on its own servers or in the EU. On Enterprise, Teamhood runs on-premise, hybrid or on dedicated hosting. Hybrid keeps the database on your servers and runs the app in Teamhood’s cloud.

In the Gantt, dependencies reschedule the work behind them. The Gantt draws the critical path, and baselines compare the plan with a saved version. Planned hours count across every project, so you see who has time before you commit them. Time tracking and timesheets are included.

Enterprise adds single sign-on (SSO), SCIM user provisioning and onboarding help. Your data stays readable over the REST API at any time.

What Teamhood does not do

  • Teamhood cannot read an .mpp file. Save each plan as XML in Project desktop first.
  • The MS Project import leaves out constraints, calendars, baselines, costs and custom fields. Lag is rounded to whole working days.
  • On-premise, hybrid and dedicated hosting, and the choice of region, are on Enterprise only.

Questions

Does Project Server 2019 stop working after 14 July 2026?
Microsoft’s lifecycle page gives the date support ended. It gives no shutdown date. After 14 July 2026, free security updates stop.
Can I upgrade from Project Server 2013 to Subscription Edition?
Not directly. Microsoft’s path is 2013 to 2016 first, then 2016 to Subscription Edition.
Is Project Online an option?
No. Microsoft set 30 September 2026 as the retirement date for Project Online. It stopped selling it to new customers on 1 October 2025.
How do I move a plan from Project Server to Teamhood?
Open the plan in Project desktop and save it as XML. Teamhood imports the XML file, up to 10 MB.
